Primary and Secondary Education

Education at the primary and secondary levels are important priorities for the region.

There are five School Districts in Columbia County:

Columbia County also offers a private, Quaker school for Preschool through Grade 8 called the Greenwood Friends School in Millville, PA. According to their website, the school is guided by Quaker principles of integrity, equality, community, simplicity, and peace. The school is accredited by PAIS, and serves preschool through eighth grade students from a broad range of backgrounds. Students reflect our area’s ethnic, economic, and social diversity. The school serves families from 17 districts, including Benton, Berwick, Bloomsburg, Central Columbia, Danville, East Lycoming, Lewisburg, Millville, Milton, and Warrior Run.

The region is also home to the Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School (AVTS). The Columbia-Montour AVTS is a full-time area vocational-technical school located just off US Route 11, between Bloomsburg and Berwick. The school’s mission is to provide quality vocational education programs and the necessary supportive academic and extra-curricular programs to secondary students of all ability levels.

Post-Secondary and Higher Education

Bloomsburg University
The town of Bloomsburg centers around Bloomsburg University. Building on a rich history of academic excellence as one of 14 public universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, Bloomsburg University prepares and inspires students to become dynamic and confident leaders with more than 80 programs leading to bachelor’s degrees, 20 graduate programs leading to master’s degrees and a doctorate in audiology. BU’s Division of Corporate and Continuing Education provides a variety of educational and training programs for people of all ages and all types of businesses.

Luzerne County Community College
With a location in the Eagles Building in downtown Berwick, Luzerne County Community College offers both day and evening classes for residents. In addition to the many credit courses offered, the Berwick Center offers short-term, credit-free classes. Career counseling, academic advisement, placement testing, course registration, and tutoring assistance are among the services available at the Center.

Columbia-Montour Area Vocational-Technical School (AVTS)
The Columbia-Montour AVTS is a full-time area vocational-technical school located just off US Route 11, between Bloomsburg and Berwick. The school’s mission is to provide quality vocational education programs and the necessary supportive academic and extra-curricular programs to secondary students of all ability levels. They also provide training at the adult level in numerous vocational education areas.
