Northeastern and Central PA are blessed with many natural energy resources. The region has a long history with Anthracite coal mining and energy production, and has started developing some sustainable energy resources such as wind, biomass, solar and geothermal. Most recently, the region has experienced a boom in natural gas production, especially in terms of Marcellus and Utica Shale. Columbia and Montour Counties are on the edge of that production. Penn State University recently formed the Marcellus Center for Outreach and Research and provides helpful Fact Sheets, resources, and maps related to this topic.
